גדלתי בלוס אנג׳לס קליפורניה, וב1991 כשהייתי בת 10 נסענו אני ואבי ז״ל בכביש 5 שנוסע דרך העמק, פתאום אנחנו רואים שכל ההרים מסביב מלאים באלפי מטריות צהובות ענקיות, זה פשוט העיף אותנו בתדהמה ועצרנו בצד לפיקניק מתחת לאחת המטריות

הפרוייקט הזה של קריסטו ואישתו ז׳אן-קלוד נתן לי לרגע להרגיש שאני כמו אליסה בארץ הפלאות, שהמציאות יכולה להתעלות למקומות קסומים ומיוחדים ואני מלאת הודיה שהתאפשר מזלי לחוות את העבודה הזאת ובטוחה שזה השאיר בי חותם שחיזק את הרצון והשתוקקות שלי לעסוק ביצירה והשראה

הסרטון הקצר שהעלתי הוא 6 דקות מתוך סרט מלא שעשו האחים מייזלס על הפרויקט של המטריות – סרט מרגש ויפה לא פחות. מדובר בפרוייקט שלקח הרבה מאד שנים לקבל אישורים ועמד רק 18 יום – כמו כל הפרוייקטים של קריסטו וז׳אן-קלוד, הם לוקחים עשרות שנים לקבל אישורים ובסוף בפועל עומדים רק מספר שבועות. הפרוייקטים שלהם לגמרי ממומנים על ידם – הם לעולם לא לקחו סיבסוד למרות שהציעו להם כי הם רצו נקיות כפיים (שלא יהיו השפעות משום גורם חיצוני), כל פרוייקט הוא חינם מבחינת החוויה של הצופה, וכל פרוייקט הוא זמני – חוויה חד-פעמית שחווים

ב2005 זכיתי שוב להיות נוכחת פיזית בעבודה שלהם כשלמדתי אמנות בניו יורק – זה היה הפרוייקט של ״השערים״ שלקח 26 שנה לקבל עליו אישורים ועמד לתצוגה רק שבועיים. אחד המשפטים הידועים של קריסטו הוא

כל העבודות שלנו הם על חופש. אף אחד לא יכול לקנות אותם ואף אחד לא יכול למכור כרטיסים כדי לחוות אותם. בעלות היא אויב של החופש ורכושנות שווה לקביעות, זאת הסיבה שכל הפרוייקטים שלנו לא יכולים להיות קבועים וחייבים להסתלק לעולמי עד. הפרוייקטים שלנו הם פעם בחיים ו׳היה היה ביום קסום אחד׳.״

קריסטו הוא אחד האנשים שהכי עוררו ומעוררים בי השראה, לא רק מבחינה אמנותית אלא גם מהרבה מאד בחינות – הדימיון הרחב, הענווה, האמונה, הנאמנות לתהליך, היכולת לשמוע ״לא״ ולהמשיך באותה מידה של התלהבות וביטחון, האורך רוח, התשוקה, ובעיקר האמת.

In 1991, when I was 10 years old, my father and I drove through the valley on Interstate 5 in LA, CA until suddenly we saw that all the hills in the horizon and the surroundings are full of thousands of huge yellow umbrellas, we were shocked! Full of wonder and amazement we had to stop and sit under the nearest umbrella, having a spontaneous picnic together (which is a memory I hold dear to my heart, as my father was my best-friend who past away almost 20 years ago).

The “Umbrellas” project by Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude gave me a moment to feel as if I’m Alice in Wonderland and that reality can be elevated to an enchanting and extraordinary place. I am so grateful that I was lucky to experience this unbelievable artwork and am sure that it influenced me on my path in becoming an artist.

In the 6-minute video above I edited small bits from a 1:20 hours film created by Albert and David Maysles – Maysles Films (a must-seefilm – as all of their films about Christo’s work). The “Umbrellas” project took many years but was exhibited for only 18 days (as most of their works, they take tens of years to get legal / social approval as it’s implementation / fabrication, but at the end only exhibited for a few weeks).

All of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s projects are independently financed – they had a moral code not to have any interference in their work from potential influencers and so they never got any subsidization on any of their projects. Other than that – all of their public projects were free to experience and temporary (a once in a lifetime encounter).

In 2005 when I was studying at Pratt Institute in New York I again had the privilege in physically experiencing another of their projects “The Gates” – a project that took 26 years in getting approval and stood for exhibition only two weeks. One of Christo’s famous quotes is:

“All our work is about Freedom.
Nobody can buy our projects.
Nobody can sell tickets to experience our projects.
Freedom is the enemy of possession and possession is equal to permanence. That is why our projects can not remain and must go away forever. Our projects are ‘Once-in-a-Lifetime’ and ‘Once-upon-a-Time’.”

For me Christo is one of the most influential and inspirational, not just artistically, but because of so many more aspects – his enormous vision and imagination, his humility, his faith, his devotion to the process, his ability to hear “No” and keep going with the same amount of enthusiasm and confidence, his patience and passion, and his complete independence and personal integrity.
