Quest-ion /
I carved into a poetry book written by Rachel Bluwstein (If she wasn’t a relative, I don’t know if I would have dared to cut into the book).
Rachel was my grandfather’s aunt (my grandfather Moshe), and in this work I sought a dialogue with her. I did not cut up a poem from her words; rather, I searched for and revealed questions she had asked in the book.
Her poetry book contains 83 questions. It’s amazing how much space she opens up with each of her questions. I’m not an expert in poetry, but isn’t it special and rare to ask so many questions in poetry? Are there other poets who also ask many questions in their poems?
If I could reveal all the questions onto the surface of the book of course I would – but it’s impossible because half are on one side of the book, half on the other, and many are layered in the same spot (not to mention the 80 exclamation marks I could have focused on in the poems in this book).
In a world like today, where everyone has so many answers, perhaps we should learn from Rachel to open more windows and ask more questions ? An answer fills the space / a question clears it, leaving room for reflection and for the wind to blow through.
These are the 14 questions I spotlighted in the book: “Do you remember?”, “How will I find the courage within?”, “What happened to you?”, “Should I believe in tomorrow?”, “Beautiful words?”, “In his own life?”, “Should I justify the judgement?”, “In a poem?”, “Should I walk away? Or strike the rock until it bleeds?”, “Time?”, “Should I curse you in anger?”, “Did I dream a dream?”, “Should I start over?”.
